Dayton Gunman Connor Betts
Connor Betts, aged 24, has been identified as the gunman in Sunday morning's mass shooting where nine people were killed and 27 were injured. It was the second mass shooting in less than 24 hours: the day before 22 people were fatally shot by Texas Walmart shooter Patrick Crusius.
Betts opened fire in the streets of the Oregon District of Dayton, Ohio at 1:05 a.m at a bar called Ned Peppers Bar. He allegedly wore body armor and carried a .223-caliber "AK-like gun" with ammunition magazines. Police were nearby and able to end the spree in about 30 seconds before Betts was shot by police and died from his injuries. Among the victims was his sister 22-year-old Megan Betts. The two had grown up in the Dayton suburbs.
Along with Megan Betts, the victims of the Dayton attackhave been reported as Lois Oglesby, 27; Saeed Saleh, 38; Derrick Fudge, 57; Logan Turner, 30; Nicholas Cumer, 25; Thomas McNichols, 25; Beatrice Warren Curtis, 36; Monica Brickhouse, 39. More on the victims backgrounds was reported by NBC.
Elizabeth Long of Kettering Health Center added that victims were taken to three different hospitals. Nine individuals were treated at Grandview Medical Center. Three are in "serious condition."
"The injuries ranged from gunshot wounds to the lower extremities to abdominal wounds," Long stated. "One person came in for a laceration to a foot that happened during the chaos right after that incident."
Betts was seen at a bar hours before the shooting
The killers motive is unclear at this point but it does not appear to be race related as suggested in the Crusius spree. Dayton police chief Richard Biehl stated during a Sunday press conference “We are not seeing any indication of race being a motive.”
It has been reported that Connor Betts had given those around him cause for alarm: high school classmate Theo Gainey, described Betts as “kind of a loner, bit of an outcast.” adding “Lots of people saw kind of a dark side in him.”
Betts attended Bellbrook High School with Will El-Fakir, who told the Dayton Daily News that he stopped talking to him five months ago after the future killer held a gun to his head. El-Fakir also told the paper that his former friend was “definitely not a right-leaning person. His political views definitely leaned to the left. And believe it or not, he was actually pro-gun control. He was actually anti-Second Amendment.”
Former girlfriend. Adelia Johnson
Other troubling signs have been reported by a former girlfriend. Caitlyn Adelia Johnson dated Betts for several months. The two bonded over the fact that they both had mental illness, but she broke up with him in May. She stated that on their first date he showed her a video of a mass shooting .Connor Betts also took Johnson to a gun range, “I started to get uneasy when he called me drunk and was talking about wanting to hurt people,” the 24-year-old college student said. She said that she never contacted police because she didn’t want to believe he was capable of hurting others.
The FBI has launched an investigation into the attacker stating that Betts was “very specifically seeking out information that promotes violence”. Daily Wire reported that Betts was hardcore Leftist, Pro-Warren, Pro-Socialism, Pro-Satan advocate who supported and promoted Bernie Sanders, Antifa, and gun control. He had also voiced support for Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez's (D-NY) "concentration camp" rhetoric, and strong anti-ICE sentiment on his Twitter account called Flowers for Atomsk.
The self described leftist also confusingly retweeted "support for gun control after the El Paso shooting".
Daily Wire also pointed out that news coverage for the Dayton shooting has plaed in comparison to the coverage given to the Texas Walmart shooting - suggesting that the left leaning ideologies of Betts have kept him out of the spotlight.
The attacker promoted multiple tweets from different chapters of the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA), a fringe far-left party to which Ocasio-Cortez belongs. The attacker made comments stating that he wanted socialism imposed and was not willing to wait for people to come around to his way of thinking. The attacker said that he had "crippling depression," which he said was responsible for his drinking. The attacker also repeatedly made strong pro-Satan comments and repeatedly talked about smoking meth.
Ohio shooter with his ANTIFA Club
Obviously, people are looking for answers as to how these shootings could occur. An Ohio reporter named Jim Heath tried to find a scapegoat for the shooting, suggesting that Massachusetts metalcore band The Acacia Strain held some responsibility for the shootings. It has been reported that the shooter was wearing one of the band's hoodies which read 'No heart to fear, no soul to steal.'"
Heath wrote on Twitter, adding "The slogan is believed to be from a hateful and vengeful song called Ramirez by The Acacia Strain, a metalcore band."
Singer Vincent Bennett responded on Twitter to say "What happened in Dayton is horrifying. Even more so to know that the shooter was wearing a TAS hoodie is making me sick. There is no excuse for this. Anyone who knows anything knows we don’t condone this behavior. No one has the right to take another’s life." Vincent added that the band "will be taking action to help the families of the victims however we can."
