We Dated Natalie Portman Way Back...and We've Got Pics to Prove it

Ok, we didn't really date Natalie Portman though that would be really awesome. But that is what musician Moby has claimed in a weird ongoing series of "he said she said" stories between the two celebrities.

It first started with a claim Moby made in his recently released memoir called "Then It Fell Apart." In the book, the guy says that he met Natalie backstage at one of his concerts where she flirted with him. Moby was 33 at the time while Portman was 20 years old. He said that he did try to date her - but wrote in his book that it didn't go as he hoped:

"For a few weeks I had tried to be Natalie's boyfriend, but it hadn't worked out ... I thought that I was going to have to tell her that my panic was too egregious for me to be in a real relationship, but one night on the phone she informed me that she'd met somebody else. I was relieved that I'd never have to tell her how damaged I was."

Natalie Portman then responded to Moby's claim in an interview with Harper's Bazaar with a much different version of events. She said that she had just graduated high school and was only 18 when they met. It didn't take long for her to realize that Moby was an older guy who was interested in her in a way that felt inappropriate.

"I was surprised to hear that he characterized the very short time that I knew him as dating because my recollection is a much older man being creepy with me when I just had graduated high school," she said.

Portman was also upset that neither the musician or the publisher of the book had contacted her to verify the accuracy of the claim. Moby then responded in a series of Instagram posts (that have been since deleted) that he felt hurt by Portman's denial saying "It hurts to be lied about, especially as I've always respected her, and I thought we were friends."

Since the backlash, Moby has backed down and issued an apology while also canceling the remainder of his book tour. "I’m going to go away for awhile," Moby wrote on Instagram with a message declaring it was his "last post." His website added that the musician is "canceling all upcoming public appearances for the foreseeable future."

To her defense, Portman looks way less enthusiastic in the pics above than Moby does suggesting that maybe they did have a different perspective on the context of their friendship. Moby is also known to be a bit of a weirdo, having claimed such things as he invented the I-Phone. Whatever the case, this does sound like a guy trying to drum up some controversy to sell a book, but the attempt was a major fail. There is definitely something to learn here thirsty guys.
