Strange Coincidences Between Lincoln and Kennedy
Sometimes it seems like everyone is looking to find a conspiracy. Take a few interesting tidbits of information, twist a few facts, ignore a few others, and spread it like wildfire until it becomes urban legend. One example we can think of is the supposed relationship between the lives (and deaths) of former Presidents Abraham Lincoln and John F. Kennedy. We took a look at some of the similarities and found that it's hard to deny that there are some unusual coincidences that exist, but (with the help of Snopes) found that there are some falsehoods and misrepresentations which perpetuate the myth. There is also a lot of numerical conspiracy evidence here which you either buy into or you don't. We sort out the facts from the lies below so that you can draw your own conclusion.
Abraham Lincoln was elected to Congress in 1846 and was elected President in 1860. John F. Kennedy was elected to Congress in 1946 and was elected President in 1960. That's a weird coincidence for sure, but totally possible given that Presidents are elected every four years. Another odd coincidence is that Lincoln's secretary was named Kennedy, and Kennedy's secretary was named Lincoln. Strange right? Then comes the numerology - the names Lincoln and Kennedy each contain seven letters.
Adding to the strange similarities between the presidents is that both saw their wives lose their children while living in the White House. Lincoln lost his eleven-year-old son Willie to typhoid after his first year in office. The Kennedy's had a child born prematurely who would die two days later.
Some say that both were particularly concerned with civil rights. That's fair, but keep in mind that civil rights were probably the biggest challenges they faced when taking office. Lincoln was trying to keep a nation from falling apart over the issue of slavery. Kennedy meanwhile saw civil rights as a moral issue which threatened the nation in a time when racial tensions were escalating.
Both Presidents were succeeded by Southerners who were named Johnson: Andrew Johnson, who succeeded Lincoln after his assassination, was born on December 29, 1808, in Raleigh, NC. Though he may have been born on southern soil, he remained loyal to the Union when his state when it seceded - the only Southern senator who did so. Lyndon Johnson, who succeeded Kennedy, was born on August 27, 1908, in Stonewall, TX. Both names contain 13 letters.
Lee Harvey Oswald, who assassinated Kennedy, was born in 1939. It has been said that John Wilkes Booth, who assassinated Lincoln, was born in 1839. In reality, his birth date is May 10, 1838. It seems conspiracy theorists have fudged the numbers to make it fit the story. They were known by their three names, but the thing is, they were not called by their full names until after the assassinations. Both middle names do contain six letters, and their full names each contain fifteen letters - though they were known to use aliases.
It's not quite true that both were Southerners: Oswald was born in Louisiana, but lived in Texas and New York as well. It's doubtful he had any sort of 'Southern Pride'. Booth may have been a southern sympathizer, but was born in Maryland to a prominent family and assassinated a man of humble beginnings. In contrast, Oswald was raised in near poverty and killed Kennedy - a man from an affluent background.
Booth ran from the Ford theater and fled to Virginia. Some say that Booth was apprehended in a warehouse which is taking a bit of creative license: Federal agents caught him 11 days later on a farm where he was hiding in a barn with his co-conspirator, David Herold. The barn was set ablaze and Booth was shot when he didn't come out.
It is true that Oswald ran from a warehouse and was caught in a theater, where he was arrested. But police were after him for other charges since he was wanted for the murder of a police officer. They had no clue at the time about his connection to the Kennedy assassination.
Booth and Oswald were both assassinated before they could stand trial - killed by a single gunshot and neither of their autopsy photos have ever been released. A writer named George W. Bailey has studied the assassination of JFK and found some other similarities between the killers which he outlines on a site called Oswald's Mother.
Lincoln was shot at the Ford Theater. The SS-100-X Presidential limousine which Kennedy was shot in was a Lincoln Continental made by the Ford Motor Company. Both Presidents were shot on a Friday - and both were shot in the head. Adding another twist (which may be a bit of a reach) a week before Lincoln was shot, he visited Monroe , Maryland. President Kennedy is known to have had an affair with Marilyn Monroe, which has been falsely stated as Kennedy visited her: this isn't true. Monroe died the year before.
Are there too many similarities between Lincoln and Kennedy to ignore?
