Most of us reach for our pajamas when it's time for bed. Others might sleep in just a t-shirt and underwear. It turns out that sleeping naked might be the best way to sleep for your health. Here are 5 reasons why you should consider sleeping naked starting tonight.
Sleeping Naked Can Help you Sleep Deeper
For your body to relax and get a good nights sleep, body temperature needs to reach an optimal temperature. You may be cold when you first get into the bed, but layers of clothing and blankets can actually cause your body temperature to rise during the night and negatively effect the quality of sleep you get. By sleeping naked, your body is better able to regulate its core temperature and sleep more restfully. The best temperature for sleep is between 60 and 65 degrees which helps you to fall asleep more quickly, wake up less often, and reach deeper stages of REM sleep which helps the body recuperate.
Sleeping Naked Might Help You Lose Weight
When your body reaches the optimal temperature, it is able to utilize brown fat stores. This type of fat is burned to create body heat and maintain a perfect body temperature. So sleeping naked, at a lower temperature, could raise your metabolism so that you burn more fat all day long.
Sleeping Naked Helps Regulate Insulin Levels
Researchers have found that exposure to cold temperatures helps to regulate the insulin balancing hormones leptin and adiponectin. After sleeping naked, you may find that you have an easier time keeping your weight in check because leptin helps to control appetite and adiponectin helps with glucose metabolism and breaking down fatty acids. The secretion of these hormones is impaired when we don't get good quality sleep. It'll take about a month of sleeping naked to get these hormones back in check - but you should start seeing improvements in your weight and energy levels which will also help you find the motivation to work out more.
Sleeping Naked Can Improve Skin Quality
If you read my recent article, then you already know some of the worst things you can do for you skin. On that list was not getting enough sleep. Not only will sleeping naked improve the quality of your sleep, but it will also do away with the friction that can irritate skin caused by clothes that are pulled and twisted during the night. This is the main reason that I hate to wear pajamas - I end up waking up in the middle of the night with my bottoms turned nearly all the way around. I sleep a lot more soundly and wake up less often by going naked. Not to mention warm clothing can cause rashes and itching, and clothes that are not the cleanest can clog pores and cause acne.

It's pretty obvious but laying naked next to the one you love is pretty intimate. That skin on skin contact can help trigger the release of oxytocin - the bonding hormone. Couples who sleep naked together report feeling a lot more frisky, and it's easy to imagine why. This might be my favorite reason for sleeping naked. Are you convinced yet?
Even though sleeping naked has many benefits, only about 60% of men and women go naked at bed time. If you decide to give it a try, be sure that your bed is ready to set the right sleep mood. Wash your sheets often to make sure they are clean and free of dust mites or even mold. I wash my sheets once a week and the National Sleep Foundation makes the same recommendation.
