Today, in 1977, ABBA went to No.1 on the US singles chart with 'Dancing Queen'
The next time your parents (or maybe grandparents) complain about whatever trap beat your listening to, remind them that disco was the music of choice in their day. A group called ABBA was one of the biggest names in the game, and on this day in 1977 ABBA went to No.1 on the US singles chart with a song called 'Dancing Queen'.
Don't know who ABBA is? They were a Swedish pop group, formed in Stockholm in 1972. According to Wikipedia:
The group name derives from the first letter in each of their names. They became one of the most commercially successful acts in the history of popular music, topping the charts worldwide from 1974 to 1982. ABBA are estimated to have sold 140 to over 500 million records, making them one of the best-selling music artists of all time. They are also the best-selling band from continental Europe and from outside the English-speaking world. ABBA is the first group from a non-English-speaking country to achieve consistent success in the charts of English-speaking countries, including the United Kingdom, Ireland, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, and the United States.
ABBA earned their only number 1 hit in the United States when "Dancing Queen" went to the top. The song also led the charts in 13 other countries.
