Homemade Pineapple Cough Syrup

April 29, 2019

Everyone gets sick from time to time, and when you do - the cold usually comes along with a cough that you can't seem to get rid of. That is probably the worst part of getting the flu. Sure it sucks to feel tired and achy, but a lot of that feeling comes from coughing all night and not being able to get the rest you need.

When we just can't take anymore, most of us reach for an over the counter cough syrup like NyQuil. Sure they work, but not without a lot of potential side effects. Most OTC cough syrups contain dextromethorphan which is a cough suppressant that can cause blurred vision, irregular heart rate and blood pressure, impaired judgment and mental function, memory loss, and a bunch of other things that are much worse than having a cough.

Dextromethorphan is also something you might want to avoid giving your kids since it also has a high potential for abuse: According to WebMD "A 2008 study found that one in 10 American teenagers has abused products with DXM to get high, making it more popular in that age group than cocaine, ecstasy, LSD, and meth. Although DXM products are quite safe when taken as recommended, high doses can cause hallucinogenic trips -- and pose serious risks".

I prefer to seek out natural remedies, and I turned to a friend of mine who works in a call center. She is a lot like me - preferring to try natural methods first - so I thought she might have some ideas for a natural cough syrup without the side effects of DXM.   After all, if she can't stop coughing it means she is going to miss days of work that she can't afford. Luckily, she came to the rescue and gave me the following home cough remedy to share with my readers. With just a handful of ingredients (many of them you probably already have in the kitchen) you can fight your cough and feel better fast.

Pineapple Juice Cough Remedy

1 cup pineapple juice, add a pinch of salt, a pinch of pepper, 1 1/2 tbsp honey, 3 inches ginger root, 1/4 cup lemon juice,  and 1/2 tsp cayenne pepper.

That's it. No NyQuil, no DXM, no side effects. Just all natural ingredients for fighting a cough. I have tried it and it works. The main ingredient, pineapple, has actually been proven to be very effective at stopping a cough because pineapple contains bromelain - an enzyme which has anti-inflammatory properties which help to combat infections and bacteria. Honey is rich in antioxidants, and ginger root is known to soothe respiratory ailments. If you ask me, this Pineapple Juice Cough Remedy tastes a lot better than anything over the counter as well. But don't take my word for it - give it a try and comment below to let me know how it worked for you.
