Should the Voting Age Be Lowered?

March 17, 2019

According to reports, Democratic House Speaker Nancy Pelosi is in favor of lowering the age to vote to 16 in an effort to increase voter engagement and interest in politics. Pelosi was quoted as saying:

“I myself, personally — I’m not speaking for my caucus — I myself have always been for lowering the voting age to 16, I think it’s really important to capture kids when they’re in high school when they’re interested in all of this when they’re learning about government to be able to vote.”

Pelosi has previously made similar statements, and the issue was brought to the House last week in the form of the proposed amendment called the “For the People Act,” or HR 1.

This sounds like nothing more than a Democratic attempt to increase the voter pool and skew it towards a more liberal demographic. No disrespect to those who can't even legally drink alcohol, but a 16 year old probably isn't informed enough to make the choice of President to lead a country for four or more years.

What do you think? Should the voting age be lowered?
