Recycled Tire Sculptures

January 10, 2019

Old tires are everywhere. We had a neighbor with enough of them that he could have started a business. According to the EPA and the Rubber Manufacturers Association, over 290 million tires are discarded in the United States alone every year. Recycling them isn't easy, what makes them tough enough to withstand road use also makes them difficult to recycle: steel belts mean that they can be dangerous, something you're probably aware of if you have ever had a blow out. About 80% of tires do end up recycled, re-purposed into things like playground beds, new roads, and all kinds of shock absorbing industrial uses. These artists take a different approach to tire recycling - making them into one of a kind artworks. Check out the videos below and see some of the creative ways they have recycled old tires into art.
