Review: Jameson Caskmates

April 26, 2017

Here at BDSC, we are fans of stouts which is why we drink a lot of Guinness. For an office party we decided to splurge on a nicer bottle of whiskey to celebrate the success the website has been having, and made a trip to the local spirits store. Now usually we shop on the bottom to middle shelf, meaning low dollar whiskeys that will put hair on your chest. This time around we decided to go big (for us) and purchase a celebratory bottle of Jameson Caskmates.

Think of Jameson Caskmates as a stout version of the regular Irish Whiskey. We opened the bottle and and poured a share for everyone. Out of the bottle it looks darker than the standard version with almost a gold or copper color. It smelled rich with a hint of coffee and oak. Turns out our low dollar noses were pretty spot on according to Jameson's own description:

Nose: crisp orchard fruits like green apples and pears, mild pot still spices

Taste: Subtle touch of hops and cocoa beans, Marzipan and charred oak

Finish: Long and sweet with Milk Chocolate and Butterscotch

Jameson Caskmates is a collaboration with Cork Countycraft brewer Franciscan Well.  New Middleton’s Master of Whiskey Science David Quinn loaned some used bourbon barrels to Franciscan Well’s Shane Long, who made a limited edition stout, then returned the barrels. Quinn didn't know what to do with the perfectly good barrels once they were returned. They were not serviceable for regular production but still were usable for something, so he experimented by finishing some regular Jameson whiskey in them. The result was the first batch of Jameson Caskmates.  At first it was  available only in Ireland and received a warm reception. Now in regular production, it has become a bit difficult to find due to its popularity, and can sell for quite a premium.

We were sold on the stout whiskey when five minutes into drinking, a girl at the party announced "it's hot in here! I need to take my shirt off" then proceeded to finish her glass, standing around in her bra. If that isn't a reason to buy, I don't know what is. All in all, we were quite pleased with Jameson Caskmates and would purchase it again, if our budget allows.
